A man is dead after being stabbed by an armed intruder who allegedly forced his way into a home armed with a knife.

Officers were called to an address at the village of Iluka, just north of Yamba in the NSW Northern Rivers region, about 4.30pm on Saturday to reports "a man armed with a knife had allegedly forced his way into a home and attacked the resident".

Paramedics attended but the resident died.

Police caught up with the alleged stabber driving north on the Pacific Highway a short time later.

"When the driver allegedly ignored police directions, a pursuit was initiated and continued north ... to Woodburn where road spikes were successfully deployed," police said in a statement.

A 58-year-old man was arrested and is being questioned.
