A 54-year-old man carrying a knife has been arrested after armed police were called to a quiet residential street. Stunned residents watched on as the man reportedly shouted at police from an upstairs window of a house on Constable Drive in the St Julians area of Newport.
Gwent Police officers attended the scene on Tuesday morning after reports of a man making threats to others while carrying a knife on the street which is a short distance from the local primary school. Eyewitnesses said many residents watched on as armed police with guns and shields approached a property after arriving at 10.45am.

Video footage taken by a resident shows five marked police cars and at least six armed officers at the scene, as well as three other officers. One eyewitness said the man eventually “came out with his hands in front of him and police arrested him”.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We received a call regarding a disturbance in Constable Drive, Newport, at around 10.10am on Tuesday, May 24. Officers attended after receiving a report that a man was making threats to others while holding a knife.
“A 54-year-old Newport man was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in police custody. A search of the area was conducted by officers and the knife was located and seized, while specially-trained firearms officers also attended as a precaution.”
