KIUG to serve as World University Games qualifier

Khelo India University Games, scheduled to start here on April 24, will serve as a qualifying event for the World University Games set to be held in Chengdu, China from June 26.

“As of now we have information that the World (University) Games is scheduled to be held in China,” said U.V. Shankar, Director of Sports, Jain University, at the media briefing on Tuesday.

“Nobody has said it is going to be cancelled. So, we are looking at that. Most of the kids from different universities across the country are going to compete in KIUG and it will have stiff competition in all sports.”

Top sportspersons like Dutee Chand (athletics), Srihari Nataraj (swimming), Manu Bhaker (shooting) and Madhu Vedwan (archery) are expected to feature in the KIUG.

However, the desire to conduct KIUG as a green event by doing away with fresh bottled water may not come to fruition. Strict anti-doping control often necessitates the use sealed water bottles to avoid contamination.

“NADA wants fresh bottled water. The discussions are still on regarding this. We may have to provide plastic bottled water to the athletes when they are asked to go for a dope test,” added Shankar.
