Kirstie Allsopp hits back after backlash over 'anyone can buy a house' comments

Location, Location, Location star Kirstie Allsopp has defended herself against the backlash she received after saying 'anyone can buy a house'.

The mum-of-two, 50, was accused of being 'tone deaf' after suggesting hopeful homeowners could jump on the property ladder if they stopped their Netflix subscriptions - and drinking coffee out of the house.

Piers Morgan weighed in on the debate calling Kirstie a "woefully privileged thing", but now the Keep Crafting and Carry On star has hit back.

Responding to a post which read: "I think you actually enjoy the thought of people thinking you’re a rich b***h," Kirstie wrote: "Either you think I’m an out of touch rich b***h who doesn’t get how hard it is to buy a home in many parts of the UK or you don’t.

"The Times can twist things as much as they want but in the end it’s down to whether you believe in my empathy, understanding & experience or not."

Kirstie was then advised to "stop giving interviews" to which she replied: "Good advice which I have already taken.

"I’m sticking to radio & podcasts, much more difficult to twists people’s words when the come directly from their mouth to your ears."

Speaking to Sunday Times, Kirstie said that she felt 'enraged' when she hears young people complain that they can't afford to buy a house due to the fact they are not disciplined enough to forego their luxuries.

Kirstie also suggested that young people should move in with their parents or 'find homes up north' in cheaper areas if they are struggling to afford their lifestyles while saving for a home of their own.

“When I bought my first property, going abroad, the easyJet, coffee, gym, Netflix lifestyle didn’t exist," she mused.

“I used to walk to work with a sandwich. And on payday I’d go for a pizza, and to a movie, and buy lipstick. Interest rates were 15 per cent, I was earning £11,500 a year.”

The star is said to have bought her first property with family help at the age of 21.

At that time, the average house price in the UK was about £51,000.

The controversial interview struck a nerve with outspoken broadcaster Piers, who called Kirstie, whose family boasts aristocratic links, "unbelievably stupid".

He said: "Every time Kirstie Allsopp trends, I check why and see she’s said another unbelievably stupid, ludicrously ill-informed and woefully privileged thing," the 56-year-old star tweeted.

"Then I wait for her to respond to the entirely justified outrage by throwing her toys out of the pram and quitting Twitter again."
