Kirkliston’s Ceri Ann Glen bags another world title with Mixed Pairs success

Kirkliston’s Ceri Ann Glen has added the Mixed Pairs crown to her burgeoning CV, 14 years after winning her previous title at the Imagine Cruising World Indoor Bowls Championships, as she and Stewart Anderson reigned supreme at Potters.

The new pairing defeated defending champions Paul Foster and Alison Merrien in what eventually turned into a one-sided encounter, with Anderson proving the star of the show with a sensational performance that helped them triumph 8-8 11-2.

This was Glen’s third Mixed Pairs success after previously landing the spoils in both 2008 (when she also won the Women’s Singles) and 2009 with David Gourlay, while representing Australia, and she was naturally delighted to pocket a stunning Langham Glass Trophy on her belated return to the International Arena.

“I have absolutely loved being back here, it feels like a home from home,” said Glen, who plays indoors at the West Lothian club. “Thank you to Stewart for helping me along and playing some absolute bombs.”

Foster and Merrien looked set for a one-set lead as they forged an 8-5 advantage with just two ends to play, but Glen and Anderson picked up three shots to square the match. The second set, though, turned into something of a rout, with Foster and Merrien winning just one end as the eventual winners bashed them into virtual submission with a devastating display of bowling the portable blue rink.

“I needed to bring my best game here to beat these two guys,” Anderson said. “I played it and it happened and Ceri Ann played her part as well, I thought she was excellent.”

Foster was magnanimous in defeat, admitting the best two players triumphed on the day. He said: “The 8-8 scoreline was probably fair in the first set, but in the second, both Ceri Ann and Stewart turned the screw and he was absolutely brilliant on his forehand. They were deserved winners.”

Glen will now turn her focus to the Women’s Singles where she will face Australian Lis Featherby on Wednesday evening (January 18), with the winner to earn a place in the final on Thursday.
