Kirkcudbright to be left without a bank as Bank of Scotland announces closure plans

Kirkcudbright will be left without a bank by the end of the summer.

The Bank of Scotland has announced it is to close its branch in the town in August.

It’s one of 60 branches being closed by Lloyds Banking Group across the UK.

Kirkcudbright Provost Lesley Garbutt said: “It is very, very sad news for our community but I can’t say I’m surprised.

“It has been noticeable that the regular staff have gradually been moved on. It’s a shame but it is not a shock.”

The Bank of Scotland has been the sole bank in Kirkcudbright since the Royal Bank of Scotland closed its branch in 2015.

Two years later, Bank of Scotland announced it was closing branches in Gatehouse, Dalry and Dalbeattie – a move which left the largest town in the Stewartry without a bank.

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP, Finlay Carson, said he would be writing to the bank asking them to reconsider.

He added: “This is a bitter blow to the community of Kirkcudbright as it was the only bank still operating in the area.

“While there has been an increase in online banking services not everyone is keen to operate their financial affairs this way.

“Indeed there is also a real problem in my constituency as many people still don’t have access to broadband services.”

Vim Maru, group retail director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Just like many other high street businesses, fewer customers are choosing to visit our branches.

“Our branch network is an important way for us to support our customers but we need to adapt to the significant growth in customers choosing to do most of their everyday banking online.”
