The Kirkcudbright community could take over a popular woodland.
The town’s development trust is in the early stages of proposals to take over Barrhill Wood on the outskirts of the town.
It is currently well used by walkers and features a red squirrel hide as well as an outdoor classroom.
The trust’s Rob Asbridge said: “We are in the early stages. The first stage would be a community asset transfer and the next stage would be a buy out.
“We have just commissioned a valuation of the woodland and we have got to drum up support to show we have backing. We are also working on the economic case.
“We are hoping to work with Dumfries and Galloway Council on this.”
A new Facebook page called Barrhill Woodland Group has been created to allow people to share their ideas and show support for the project.
Mr Asbridge added: “The main thing will be to protect the woodland as it is, to protect the trees and the red squirrels.
“In the long term, not in the near future, we would like to put in a mountain bike track for young kids as a training course so they could qualify to then move on the 7Stanes.”
