Kirk Herbstreit, widely known for his college football broadcasting with ESPN, will jump to the NFL ranks in 2022.
That updates comes via NBC Sports insider Peter King.
In King’s “Football Morning in America” piece this week, he reports that Herbstreit was tabbed by Amazon to be part of their “Thursday Night Football” broadcast team.
However, it’s added duties, not a replacement.
Per the report, Herbstreit will continue his ESPN/ABC college football gigs as well.
Herbstreit has held roles relating to college football for around two decades. He had sporadically covered NFL contests for the former world-wide leader, but now Herbstreit is slated to get a consistent role doing so.
In February, the New York Post first reported on Amazon’s interest in Herbstreit.
King’s report also notes Amazon had interest in Troy Aikman, Sean McVay and John Lynch before tabbing Herbstreit for the job.
Aikman went on to jump to ESPN from FOX Sports and he will appear on their “Monday Night Football” broadcast.
McVay and Lynch remain at their current roles with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.
Next season will be Amazon’s first year as an exclusive home for Thursday NFL games.
