You may be reading that headline and wondering: Why is it that college and NFL broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit from ESPN getting into a spat with Cincinnati Reds beat writer C. Trent Rosencrans and Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic?
This is a great question. But the result has been what has turned out to be a wild feud that has been all over Twitter on Thursday.
Let’s go back to the beginning: Rosenthal and Rosencrans wrote about the (good) problem facing the Reds, which is big-name prospect Elly De La Cruz could be getting called up soon, but that could leave Jonathan India without a position given that Matt McLain is thriving at shortstop and Spencer Steer is raking at third. Could they actually trade the National League Rookie of the Year from 2021? Move him to the outfield? These are good questions to ask.
Herbstreit is a big Reds fan and started ripping on the article, which led to a big feud:
This team hasn’t had a leader that pushed his teammates every day since Scott Rolen left in 2012 and we finally have that guy and you write this article??? India’s value goes far beyond the numbers. As excited as we all are about the young talent coming up India needs to be the… https://t.co/yAsBJ9qoXr

Funny, @KirkHerbstreit says he “doesn’t know anything about Elly De La Cruz” and says he likes Matt “McCain” — but he knows how to do my job, which he seems to think is to promote the Reds and help them win https://t.co/rA9oCCLDNj

No problem with anything Kirk is saying here. Trent and I make many of the same points in the story. As for our timing, well, De La Cruz is coming, and everyone with the Reds, including India, knows it. Here, again, is the story: https://t.co/xF3C6qSBY6 https://t.co/OWwRRf05ki

Never told you how to do your job-i don’t even know who you are.
I’m a fan who loves his team you’re a troll looking for attention.
Hustle back to creating clicks and causing trouble! https://t.co/5GYeZKY3Lh— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) June 1, 2023
I was nice to Kirk in my previous tweet. Now he is being ridiculous. https://t.co/62uS8TVsOh

Well, see, @KirkHerbstreit didn’t even get past the byline of the story he claimed to read. Or apparently read about the Reds in the last 16 years or so https://t.co/7RsGBreKRE
