Kirby Smart gives take on Georgia’s alternate uniforms

We don’t get to hear much from Kirby Smart when it comes to alternate uniform combinations, but the media was able to sneak in questions this week at SEC Media Days.

The topic of Georgia’s 2020 throwback uniforms versus Arkansas came-up in Smart’s appearance on Atlanta’s 680 the Fan with Chuck Oliver.

“You may be referring to the Covid year Arkansas Classics, we did the throwback 40-year thing,” Smart said. “I don’t know if we’ll ever wear those uniforms again, but that was a tough game, that was the game Stetson (Bennett) came in.”

A tough game it was. Bennett had to come in to replace starter D’Wan Mathis in the second quarter and led the Bulldogs to a 37-10 win in Fayetteville after being led 7-5 at halftime.

That uniform combination with the red bottoms and white tops was in tribute to the 40th anniversary of Georgia’s 1980 national championship team coaches by College football Hall of Famer Vince Dooley.

“I love that (uniform) combination, too,” Smart said. “It was tribute to them, which was why we did it, I think the 40th anniversary.”

“That uniform still exists, it’s still around. I’ve never been that much into the uniform bit. I’ll say this, when the kids come in for recruiting and want to wear all the different uniforms, that’s actually one of my favorites, the red pants with the white stripe and white jersey.”

Other than in Georgia’s Peach Bowl win over Cincinnati in 2020, the Bulldogs haven’t played in alternate uniforms recently. That combination featured the classic silver britches and black tops with dog collar emblems around the neck.

Bulldog fans have been recently limited to only seeing recruits wearing alternates on their official visits.

Smart told DawgNation this week that one alternate combination he wore as a member of Georgia’s 1998 squad was “hideous.” UGA wore red tops and black bottoms with a red and white stripe.

I’m not a fan of these either, but I’m not alone in wishing to see some more alternates come down the line this fall.
