Georgia received tough news on Wednesday regarding sophomore running back Branson Robinson’s season-ending knee injury. However, head coach Smart provided some positive injury updates on three other players.
Offensive tackle Earnest Greene (ankle), inside linebacker Raylen Wilson (knee) and wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette (groin). Morrissette rejoined the team at the start of fall camp.
De’Nylon’s done a good job. He’s dealing with a little bit of a groin injury right now. He had a sports hernia on the other side. He had a groin (Tuesday) that started bothering him. But the first couple days he’s been out there with us, he’s done a really nice job. He’s competitive, tough. He brings something to the receiver room in terms of physicality, but (we) probably don’t have the whole body of work like we’ve had with the other players to judge him.
Greene, who was able to take reps at Tuesday’s practice, is in competition with Austin Blaske for the Bulldogs’ starting left tackle spot. The former four-star recruit was taking first-team reps before he suffered an ankle injury in Saturday’s scrimmage.
Blaske’s played really well. He’s had more struggles this fall camp than he’s had any other time in terms of the heat has been so different,” Smart said. “Those three guys (Blaske, Greene, and Amarius Mims) will provide depth.
Wilson was Georgia’s highest-rated linebacker out of the 2023 class and has time to get healthy behind starters Jamon-Dumas Johnson, Smael Mondon and more experienced players like Xavian Sorey Jr. and Jalon Walker.
The Bulldogs will open the season versus UT Martin on Sept. 2 in Athens with kickoff set for 6 p.m. ET (ESPN+).
