Australian basketball great Andrew Bogut has joined Brian Goorjian's Sydney Kings coaching staff while remaining a part-owner of the NBL club.

An NBA champion in 2015, Bogut retired in 2020 after two seasons playing with the Kings and joined the club's ownership group the following year.

"Being away from the game for five years, the itch to get back on the court was growing stronger with time," Bogut said.

"I'm honoured to step into this position and work alongside Brian.

"Coaching is something I'm passionate about and I can't wait to help drive this team forward."

The Kings (16-13) finished fifth this year in legendary coach Goorjian's return to the helm and were knocked out by the Adelaide 36ers in their first play-in tournament game.

Six-time NBL title-winning coach Goorjian jumped at the chance to add three-time Olympian and 2005 No.1 NBA draft pick Bogut to his coaching staff.

"Andrew has a blue-chip pedigree," Goorjian said.

"His knowledge of the game is elite and I know he will be a very valuable addition to our coaching staff.

"Andrew and I already enjoy a strong relationship and I am excited and feel fortunate to have someone of his calibre by my side.

"This will be a huge season for the Kings. The goal is clear - we want to take the throne and bring a championship back to Sydney."

Fellow Australian basketball icon Luc Longley, who is also part of the Kings' Hoops Capital ownership group, backed Bogut's move into coaching.

"His experience at the highest levels of basketball, combined with his passion for coaching, will bring a fresh dynamic to the Kings," Longley said.

"I'm excited to see how Brian and Andrew build the team next season."
