King Charles to visit Edinburgh next month to receive Honours of Scotland

King Charles is set to visit Edinburgh next month in order to be presented with the Honours of Scotland at St Giles' Cathedral.

Buckingham Palace announced the news that the newly-crowned monarch will appear in the capital in July, following his coronation in May.

The special ceremony, to be held at St Giles' Cathedral following a 'peoples procession', will mark the first time King Charles will visit the capital since he was crowned on May 6.

The King will be joined by Queen Camilla, and will take in a fly-past performance by the Red Arrows during his time in Edinburgh on July 5.

The King is also due to host a garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on July 4.

The Honours of Scotland feature a crown created for James V from the 16th century, a three-foot long sceptre and a five-foot long sword of state.

The regalia will be collected from Edinburgh Castle by a procession, involving around 100 people representing aspects of Scottish life, reports STV News.

The special objects will travel from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles' Cathedral, with a military escort alongside.

A special 21-gun salute and fly-past from the Red Arrows will take place after the ceremony - which will see the first appearance of the Stone of Destiny since the coronation weekend.

First Minister Humza Yousaf said: “Scotland will welcome the new King and Queen in July with a series of events to mark the coronation. A people’s procession, a royal procession, a national service of thanksgiving and a gun salute will take place in Edinburgh.

“Representatives from many different communities and organisations in Scotland will take part in these historic events.

“People who wish to mark this historic occasion can get involved by watching broadcast coverage or viewing events in person. We will issue more information confirming how members of the public can access events in the coming weeks.”
