King Charles sits on throne with heirs William and George in historic portraits

The King sits between his two heirs in a newly-released Coronation portrait.

The photograph of King Charles, 74, flanked by the Prince of Wales, 40, and Prince George, nine, highlights the line of succession for the Royal Family.

It was taken in Buckingham Palace’s throne room, hours after Charles was crowned at Westminster Abbey last Saturday.

During the ceremony, William pledged an oath of loyalty to his father, while George, third in line to the throne, held a key role as a Page of Honour to the King.

The portrait shows Charles wearing the Robe of Estate and the Imperial State Crown, and holding the Sovereign’s Orb and Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross.

He is sitting on one of a pair of 1902 throne chairs which were made for use by the Prince and Princess of Wales at the coronation of King Edward VII.

A second photograph shows the King and Queen Camilla with their Pages of Honour and Ladies in Attendance.

The King’s pages include Prince George, Ralph Tollemache, 12, Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, 13, and Nicholas Barclay, 13. Camilla, 75, chose grandsons Freddy Parker Bowles, 13, twins Gus and Louis Lopes, 13, and her great-nephew Arthur Elliot, 11.

The King and Queen, who is shown wearing Queen Mary’s crown and Robe of Estate, are flanked by Camilla’s sister Anna-bel Elliot and the Marchioness of Lansdowne, who was appointed to the Royal Household as a Queen’s companion in 2022.

The portraits were taken by photographer Hugh Burnard, who took Charles and Camilla’s wedding pictures in 2005.
