King Charles coronation date announced by Buckingham Palace

The date of the coronation of King Charles III has been confirmed, following his accession to the throne.

The King's coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, and will see the Queen Consort crowned alongside her husband, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. The event will be held in Westminster Abbey, eight months following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

According to the palace, the coronation will be “rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”. However, it will also “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future”.

As reported by Gloucester Live, the ceremony will see Charles III anointed with holy oil. During the event, he will be given the orb, coronation ring and sceptre, and be crowned with St Edward’s Crown.

Camilla will be anointed with holy oil and crowned as well, just as the Queen Mother was when she was crowned Queen in 1937. The Palace stated: “Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce that the coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday 6th May 2023.

“The coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort.

“The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

The ceremony will reportedly include the same core elements of the traditional service, which has kept a similar layout for over 1,000 years. However, it is also expected to be shorter and on a smaller scale.

According to Gloucester Live, the number of guests will be lowered from 8,000 to approximately 2,000. Peers will reportedly be asked to wear suits and dresses rather than ceremonial robes, while rituals like the presentation of gold ingots will be scrapped.

Usually, coronations are not held on a weekend, with Queen Elizabeth II's taking place on a Tuesday.

More information regarding the coronation will be unveiled in the coming weeks and months.
