A rare insight into the relationship between King Charles and his grandmother, the late Queen Mother, can be seen with the discovery of an old letter in a loft down south.
The incredible piece of correspondence was found by a farm manager when he was having a clear out at his home in Warwickshire, and it sat alongside other bits of royal memorabilia.
The letter, sent by a then six-year-old Prince Charles, was dated March 15, 1955 and it was sent to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Containing drawings by the young future monarch, it was written on Buckingham Palace headed paper, writes Wales Online.
It reads: “Dear Granny, I am sorry that you are ill. I hope you will be better soon. Lots of love from Charles.”
The box of royal archives belonged to a Roland Stockdale and it was his grandson who made the astonishing find
Roland had been a farm worker when he moved from his native Carlisle to London to join the MET Police, where he'd go on to serve in the Queen's personal protection force in the 1950s. Roland is thought to have worked for several royals and he died in 1983 in his 70s.
When he passed, Roland's son inherited the folder of royal memorabilia and letters, and they've been passed down to his unnamed grandson and his wife, who made the astonishing find at Christmas.
In the box, there was also letters between Mr Stockdale and William Tallon, who was known as Backstairs Billy, the Queen Mother's servant, and a postcard from Sandringham which was sent to Mr Stockdale's wife in 1983 upon news of his death reaching Clarence House, which headed the paper it was written on.
A booklet was also found titled The Words Of Her Majesty The Queen, Christmas Day Nineteen Hundred And Fifty-Six. The book is a copy of the Queen's 1956 Christmas broadcast.
His unnamed grandson said: “We finally had the time to look through a big box file that my mother had given to us. It originally belonged to my late grandad, Roland Stockdale.
"It contained lots of royal memorabilia, including a letter from Prince Charles to his grandmother. My wife said ‘wow, look at that’. We were pretty gobsmacked but we weren’t sure whether anyone would be interested in it.”
Hanson Auctioneers will sell the items on March 7 and they are expected to fetch around £4,000.
