Kind-hearted strangers help raise £24k for family of loving South Shields dad who died on Qatar oil rig

Kind-hearted friends and strangers have helped to raise over £24,000 for the family of a South Tyneside dad who died following an incident on an oil rig in Qatar.

A fundraiser was set up in the name of the Robert Robson who died last month after an incident on board the Seafox Burj rig. The 38-year-old from South Shields has been described as 'one of a kind' by his heartbroken family.

Since his death, Robert's friends and fellow oil rig workers have launched an effort to raise money to help his partner Kristie Graham and his family during this tragic time.

Over 700 people have donated to the fund and at the time of writing, the fund stands at upwards of £24,000.

The organiser Tom Stanton posted on the GoFundMe page encouraging fellow members of the oil rig industry and those from elsewhere to 'pull together' to help raise funds for Robert's heartbroken family.

He said: "Let’s pull together and take some of the financial stress off the family during this horrific time, we stand together with them and we have their backs!

"All of us can help, no donation too small. Let’s get this done before Christmas, too try allow his family to grieve in their own time and not worry about anything else but trying to love some kind of a normal life again one day.

"There’s no right words for this situation, but let’s show our support in anyway we can."

Many friends and colleagues have left tributes to the South Shields dad, with one person calling him a 'lovely person' and another saying he was 'always thinking of others'.

One person said: "Robbie, such a lovely, lovely person who had time and a smile for everyone, who I know will be sorely missed by so many.

Another added: "Robbie, you were one of the good lads on site. Honest, caring, hardworking, always thinking off others. Pleasure to know you and work with you, my friend. Never forgotten."

In December, Robert's family paid a moving tribute to the loving dad, calling him a 'beautiful soul' and 'irreplaceable'. They said: "Robbie was an amazing, one-of-a-kind, beautiful soul.

"He was a loving partner, dad, son, brother and uncle who was tragically taken too soon. He was an irreplaceable friend to many, and Robbie will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him."
