Kind-hearted pensioner donates her entire winter fuel allowance

A kind-hearted pensioner has donated her entire winter fuel allowance to help other women and children.

The woman, from the Wirral, who did not want to be named, contacted Wirral leader Janette Williamson and asked her to give the full £300 Winter Fuel Payment to Wirral Women and Children's Aid.

When she heard the news Cllr Williamson said it was "an incredibly generous and selfless act" and was touched when she opened the letter to find a cheque and explanation on why the pensioner wanted to donate.

The Wirral Council Leader added that domestic violence is an issue she has worked hard to highlight, becoming Wirral’s ‘pledge champion’ for domestic abuse reduction in 2016 and the gift will help families.

Cllr Williamson said: “People like this are shining lights in our community, people who show Wirral at its very best.

"With fuel prices rocketing, it is an incredibly generous and selfless act to give so generously to those families who have suffered domestic abuse.

“I was so touched when I opened an envelope to find the cheque and a letter explaining that she wanted to give her winter fuel allowance those mothers and children who had suffered so much.

“Here in Wirral we take a zero tolerance approach to domestic abuse, and we work closely with organisations such as Wirral Women and Children's Aid, helping wherever we can, including a commitment to exempt them from Council Tax so that every penny that is donated goes straight to helping those who need it most.”

Winter Fuel Payment is a sum of money for people were born on or before September 26, 1955 to help pay for heating bills.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has spoke out this week about the rise in cost of energy bills.

Martin issued a warning earlier this year that millions could be about to be thrown into fuel poverty as he expects energy prices to rise by 51% in April.

The price of energy has sky-rocketed due to the surging cost of wholesale gas prices and Martin said he is concerned the border dispute between Russia and Ukraine could lead to another hike.

He posted a warning on Twitter: "The news about Ukraine is worrying both in its own right... a war in Europe, awful and frightening.

"Yet in my area, more prosaically, even the threat nevermind actuality of it could make the energy crisis even worse, and future bills even higher even though that's unimaginable."
