Kind-hearted care home residents launch food bank service for Tollcross community

Kind-hearted residents at Haydale Care Home have opened a food bank service to help those who are struggling in the Tollcross area.

The Corbett Community Cupboard was launched on Tuesday (January 24) and has so far helped three families.

The food bank offers a variety of tinned foods, juices, long-life milk, biscuits and snacks as well as household essentials including nappies and winter jackets.

It'll be open every Tuesday and is being run by residents - with help from co-ordinators Kirstin Millar and Isabel Cummings - who want to thank the community for their support during the multiple coronavirus lockdowns.

Customers Relations Manager at Haydale Care Home, Paul Lawson, 50, said: "The big inspiration is that our care home has been really well supported by the community over the last two years, especially through the covid lockdowns and restrictions with visitors being able to come in the care home.

"The community were really good to us with dropping off donations and entertaining residents from the car park so they could see outside their windows.

"We felt as though we wanted to give something back to the community."

The community can also donate to the food bank by dropping donations off at drop off points at the Co-Op food store and funeral care, on Tollcross Road.

Paul added: "We have got residents under 65 who’ve got learning difficulties. They are very active and like to be busy so for them it’s been an amazing project to get involved in.

"They get excited when the donations come in and excited about going into the food bank to sort it all out. They see it as a chance for them to do something for the community.

"We are hoping to grow so that we have people coming regularly and we could help them. The door is open to everyone and no questions asked when people come, we are very friendly and welcoming. We just want to help."

Care home resident Alice Softly, 67, has been living at Haydale for the last three years and loves to get involved with community activities.

She said: "The food bank is a great idea. I like to be kind to people and like it when people are kind to me too.

"When I was young I used to volunteer to help needy people in the area and went with my teacher and a nurse to St Raymond's in Castlemilk and St Oswald's in Clarkston where we used to help out families in need. The food bank reminds me of this and I enjoy helping out."

The Corbett Community Cupboard, on Corbett Street, Tollcross, is open every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm.
