Kim Ki-Young's 'An Experience To Die For' Remastered And Screened

Kim Tam-mi and Youn Yuh-jung starred in the 1995 film 'An Experience To Die For.' The film, directed by cinematic trailblazer Kim Ki-young, is set to be showcased in a remastered 2K version in New York and online, offering film fans a rare opportunity to delve into the works of this influential filmmaker.

Kim Ki-young, known for his stylized and quirky cinema, has left a lasting impact on Korean filmmakers such as Park Chan-wook, Kim Ki-duk, and Bong Joon-ho. His films, which blend elements of melodrama, horror, and film noir, have garnered critical acclaim over the years.

One of Kim's most renowned works, 'The Housemaid' (1960), is considered a masterpiece in Korean cinema, exploring the destructive consequences of a sexually predatory femme fatale entering a family's household.

'An Experience To Die For' marked Kim Ki-young's final film, completed in 1990 but not screened until after his passing in 1998. The movie, featuring Youn Yuh-jung and Kim Tam-mi, follows two women who, after being mistreated by their husbands, contemplate a sinister plan to seek revenge by plotting each other's spouse's murder.

The film's premise draws parallels to Alfred Hitchcock's 'Strangers on A Train,' as the women embark on a twisted journey of vengeance, with one character displaying a more predatory and ruthless nature.

The screening of 'An Experience To Die For' is scheduled at New York City's Metrograph on May 17 and 19, with the film also available for viewing on Metrograph at Home, the theater's VOD platform, for a month starting May 17. Metrograph NYC, known for its focus on premieres, rare archival screenings, and special Q&As, caters to diverse audiences, filmmakers, and communities, aiming to bring a wide array of films to viewers both locally and nationwide.
