Kim Kardashian, Julia Fox and the best dressed celebrities at the 2022 CFDA Awards

Dubbed the “Oscars of Fashion”, the annual CFDA’s red carpet has historically demanded some of the best A-list looks, and this year was certainly no different.

The event, which was held at Casa Cipriani in New York last night, acknowledges the artistic achievements of American designers, creative directors and innovators. Consequently, the dress code orders the extraordinary (think Rihanna’s iconic shimmering naked dress in 2014).

For this year’s iteration, reality TV star Kim Kardashian honoured her momentous Innovator Award win for her shapewear and loungewear brand Skims with a skintight latex, strapless dress by Dolce & Gabanna. It was a nod to her recent collaboration with the Italian luxury brand, who has been cosying up to the infamous family this year – back in June they also unofficially sponsored Kourney and Travis Kardashian-Barker’s Portofino wedding.

Also in attendance was Uncut Gems star Julia Fox, who paired her subversive, full-torso cut out dress that flaunted embellished lingerie with statement wet-look gray hair. “This is a love letter to getting older,” said Fox on the red carpet. We’re embracing getting older.” The break-out fashion icon attended the ceremony with former Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn who was dressed in a black tuxedo dress outlined with cream feathers by designer Christian Cowan.

Of course the recipient of the 2022 Fashion Icon Award Lenny Kravitz had to put his best step forward, which he did with a remixed black ensemble by LaQuan Smith. The disruptive suit featured a midriff-reavling custom suit with a feather-boa lapel and matching leather trousers. “I reached out to LaQuan after admiring his work for some time and we met in person just a couple of days ago to vibe out,” says Kravitz. “We had instant chemistry and creativity hit it off right away. I love his vision and look forward to working together into the future. The fact that I’m the first to wear creations he has made for men is an honor.”

Whether it’s down to a growing awareness of fashion’s ecologically damaging need for newness or a desire for individualistic style in the face of Instagram homogeny, vintage red carpet looks have been dominating the red carpet this year. In keeping with the sustainable trend, Kylie Jenner dug into Thierry Mugler’s 90s archives and attended wearing a stunning semi-sheer, pleated one-shouldered gown from the designer’s autumn 1999 collection.
