Kim Kardashian had to dye her underwear with tea bags to match her skin tone before SKIMS

Kim Kardashian has admitted she would dye her clothes with coffee and tea bags in the hopes of getting them to match her skin tone.

The 42-year-old revealed she created her SKIMS shapewear brand in the hopes of "filling the gap" in the market and said she wanted to offer a more inclusive product.

Kim was invited to speak at the 2023 TIME100 Summit on Tuesday and opened up about her decision to found SKIMS.

"It was filling the gap of something that didn't exist in the marketplace.

"For me, I was just looking for a solution to the fact that I love to wear shapewear and there wasn't a colour tone that fit my skin tone, let alone most of my friends," she told host Poppy Harlow.

Kim continued: "There was either a super light nude, which was a more pale colour and then the colour black. There was really nothing in between.

"So I would take coffee and tea bags and I would put them in the sink or the bathtub and put shapewear in there."

She added: "I would cut them all up because you know, the cuts weren't right and I found one of my original ones, I always kept them, and it was just so funny to look back and see what I would try to do.

"And because it didn't exist, I wanted to create that and find better materials, better colours and we launched with a pretty wide arrangement of nude tones and we grew from there."

Kim launched SKIMS back in 2019 as a shapewear brand and has since expanded the brand to include loungewear and sleepwear.

The company is now worth more than $3.2billion (£2.6billion) and continues to grow.

Elsewhere in her speech, Kim paid tribute to her mother Kris Jenner and her father, the late Robert Kardashian.

"I did learn my work ethic from my dad, but I learnt so much more from my mom than I ever give her credit for," she admitted.

Kim added: "She taught us how to have a home, how to make a home."
