Kim Kardashian may be a divisive figure, but you cannot deny her unwavering commitment to fashion.
And yesterday, Kardashian once again demonstrated her ability to overlook any sort of comfort or practicality in favour of style.
After sustaining a foot injury earlier this month, the 44-year-old reality star and entrepreneur has been continuing to live her life with her foot in a cast while still in full glam. But she took it to another level yesterday when she unveiled a custom-designed cast that mirrors the appearance of a chic wedge heel.
Kardashian shared an image on her Instagram Story showcasing her plaster-wrapped foot, crafted to resemble a high-heeled shoe. The innovative medical-chic design featured an open-toe area (gotta get the red pedicure in), and a wedge-like structure so that Kim would be level with her other foot, which was wearing a real heel.
Much like Victoria Beckham appearing at her own fashion show on crutches this March (and in fact, resulted in a huge boom in sales of black crutches), Kardashian seems committed to not letting her foot injury get in the way of her busy schedule (we all remember what she said about getting off your ass and working). Last week, she attended the opening of her SKIMS flagship store in New York City while utilising a knee scooter for mobility.
But, as with all Kim K decisions, there has been backlash: some have expressed concern over the practicality and safety of a heeled cast during the healing process, with others labelling the cast "reckless.”
Despite the unfortunate timing of her injury during party season, Kardashian has said the annual Kardashian-Jenner Christmas Eve celebration will proceed, albeit in a more intimate setting due to ongoing home renovations. True to tradition, Kim said that the family will still dress up for the occasion, which means the heeled cast may well get a second outing.
This is far from the first time that Kim K’s fashion choices have sparked debate. Her most memorable incident came at the 2022 Met Gala, when she borrowed Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ dress and ripped it, causing “permanent damage”.
Her Maison Margiela Met Gala look this year also proved to be contentious, with many criticising the intense, binding corsetry required to make her waist that slim. Unbothered, Kim K continues to eschew comfort in favour of fashion and, honestly, it’s kind of camp!
