Kilwinning Rangers defeat was exactly what Glencairn deserved, admits boss

Rutherglen Glencairn gaffer Willie Harvey says his side got exactly what they deserved after they were sent packing in the Scottish Cup by 10-man Kilwinning Rangers in Saturday’s replay.

Having been seconds away from defeating The Buffs in the original tie at Hamish B Allan Stadium the previous week, Glens now find themselves out of the competition at the first hurdle thanks to a deadly double from Dylan Mackin in a 2-1 defeat.

Harvey was fuming as their game plan went out the window after just two minutes when Mackin opened the scoring and then double their lead 22 minutes later.

A second booking and red card for Buffs player Dominic Boland nine minutes after the break gave Glens a lifeline, but they failed to fully exploit that advantage as Ryan McManus’ goal in the 59th minute proved to be just a consolation.

Harvey said: “To be quite honest, we got what we deserved from the game.

“We never really performed the way we know we can.

“We lost an early goal and when they went down to 10 men at 2-0, we couldn’t take advantage of it.

“It’s very disappointing. The performance wasn’t what we expect from our players so we’ll need to talk about that over the next few days and point out where things went wrong.

“You don’t expect to lose the kind of goal we did, especially after two minutes.

“It was far too easy for them. A ball is put over the back of us and nobody is challenging the delivery into the back post.

“Their boy is standing there by himself. We had some questions about offside but I don’t know. I’d be lying if I said I was sure, but we just didn’t deal with it anyway.

“Losing a goal after two minutes, all the preparations and the planning that you’ve put in all week all change.

“Instead of trying to contain the game, you end up chasing the game.

“We had a couple of chances and their goalkeeper had two point-blank saves but at the end of the day we didn’t deserve anything from the game, being painfully blunt about it.

“We got what we deserved and that was a defeat.”

Glencairn must now lift themselves for another away day in the cup when they travel to First Divsion rivals Benburb on Saturday in the second round of the South Challenge Cup. Kick-off at New Tinto Park is 2pm.
