Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes named Scottish Championship manager of the month

Derek McInnes bagged his first Scottish Championship Glen’s manager of the month gong of the season.

McInnes, who took over at Rugby Park in January, steered Kilmarnock through an unbeaten March at a vital stage of the season.

Wins against Hamilton, Queen of the South and Partick Thistle at Rugby Park, as well as a vital Ayrshire derby victory over Ayr United at Somerset Park, have significantly boosted Kilmarnock’s hopes of an immediate return to the Scottish Premiership.

McInnes’ side now have a four-point advantage over Arbroath at the top of the Championship table.

The Killie boss said: “Any award for a player or member of staff is recognition of good work by the players. As managers, we’re all judged by the performances of the players and they’ve shown real consistency and level of performance in March.

“Obviously the main award that we’re after is clear for everyone to see."

Colin Matthews, CEO of Glen’s owner the Loch Lomond Group, said: “This was a big month of results for Kilmarnock in terms of their promotion ambitions and the fact they have now overtaken long-term leaders Arbroath at the top of the table will be seen by their supporters as a significant switch in momentum.

“With five games left, they are now four points clear of Dick Campbell’s side and Derek and his coaching staff have guided Killie to a winning run of matches at an important stage of the season.

“There is still a lot of football to be played, but to win this award so soon after his appointment in January is a testament to the progress he and his coaching staff have made at Kilmarnock and Derek is a deserving winner of the Glen’s manager of the month award for March.”
