Kilmarnock 1 Hibernian 0 as Rugby Park side go into World Cup break with vital win

Kilmarnock bounced back from three consecutive defeats to head into the World Cup break with a spring in their step.

After losing to St Johnstone, Livingston and Dundee United it was crucial that the Ayrshire side picked up a win heading into the five-week break.

Dan Armstrong was difference once again, just a day after penning a new two-year deal.

Innes Cameron had a fantastic chance after 16 minutes when he was played through on goal from Fraser Murray, but his relatively tame shot was easily saved by former Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall.

Hibs thought they’d fired themselves in front when Mykola Kukharevych turned the ball home from five yards, but the offside flag denied him and VAR supported the linesman’s decision.

Hibs looked sure to take the lead as Elias Melkersen fired towards goal, but Joe Wright did well to block the effort.

Killie were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute as Liam Polworth went down, the referee initially awarded a free-kick but he then pointed to the spot after a VAR check.

Armstrong made no mistake from the spot as he fired into his right-hand corner leaving Marshall no chance.

Hibs struggled to create much apart from a couple of goalmouth scrambles, and it was one in stoppage time that almost resulted in a goal until it was cleared from the six-yard area.

Harry McKirdy had a last gasp chance after a mazy run that ended in a powerful shot, but thankfully for the hosts it blazed over the crossbar.
