Killers of the Flower Moon has been hailed a "masterpiece" and boasts a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film – based on the acclaimed book of the same name by writer David Grann – debuted at the festival on Saturday (May 20), ahead of its release in cinemas later this year.
Set in the 1920s, the project depicts" the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy" Osage Native American tribe in Oklahoma, which took place in the 1910s until the 1930s and were widely known as the "Reign of Terror".
It stars Leonardo DiCaprio – who's an executive producer – alongside Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro. Jesse Plemons and Brendan Fraser are also cast members.
The film has been praised by critics following its premiere over the weekend and it currently boasts a rating of 95 percent on the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
At the time of writing, almost 40 from critics have been highlighted by the platform, with these examples having been primarily positive about the crime drama.
There's currently no feedback from the general audience as the film has yet to be released in cinemas. It's set to be released from October 6, before streaming on Apple TV+.
The reviews by critics – uploaded in the last few days – have been largely complimentary, with one critic describing the film as an "enthralling and extensive cinematic experience".
Another said it's "utterly absorbing", whilst it has also been hailed a "masterpiece". This included one critic who said it's "a late-career masterpiece" for director Martin Scorsese.
It's also been praised over the "exceptional performances" of the cast, with Lily considered a standout performer by some critics, whilst others also raving about Leonardo.
Rotten Tomatoes places films into different categories based on critic feedback, including "rotten" (less than 60 percent positive reviews) and "fresh" (between 60 and 100 percent).
Films in the latter category can be upgraded to "certified fresh" if they score between 75 and 100 percent. There is other criteria though – such as needing to have received reviews by at least 80 critics if widely released, or 40 if a limited release.
Killers of the Flower Moon could therefore be on its way to being "certified fresh" if it continues to receive positive reviews as more critics share their feedback on the film.
