Killers for Netflix's new Monster series revealed after Dahmer controversy

Netflix has revealed the subject of their next Monster series, which tells the stories of real-life killers.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy faced controversy last year over the retelling of the Jeffrey Dahmer story.

Critics claimed it portrayed Dahmer, who murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991, in a sympathetic light.

Families of Dahmer’s victims also said they were not consulted over the TV show, which some say went ahead without their permission.

The series became a record-breaking success on Netflix when it aired in 2022, racking up 1 billion views in the first few days of its release.

It also earned actor Evan Peters a Golden Globe for his portrayal of one of America’s worst serial killers.

But despite controversy around last year's show, the Monster series will return with a new instalment.

This time it focuses on the story of not one, but two killers – brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.

The siblings were both convicted of the brutal 1989 murders of their parents José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez, who were shot so many times it left them unrecognisable.

Their kneecaps were even shot off in a bid to make it look like a mob killing.

Lyle was 21 at the time of the murders, while brother Erik was just 18.

They claimed they acted in self-defence after years of abuse at the hands of their father, a wealthy music executive who had moved his family out to Beverly Hills.

But it later emerged José was worth around $14 million (£11m) at the time of his death and within months of the killings the brothers began spending lavishly.

Lyle is said to have bought a Rolex watch, a Porsche, designer clothes and a restaurant in Princeton, where he had been living before the murders.

Erik also bought a car, spent thousands on a personal tennis coach and the brothers went on exotic holidays, thinking they had more money coming to them.

They were eventually arrested after younger brother Erik confessed their crimes to his psychologist.

When their case was one of the first to be aired on TV in 1993, it became a national sensation.

But it took three trials and nearly seven years for the brothers to be convicted of first degree murder.

Both were sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.

Although they were sent to different prisons, Lyle, now 55, and Erik, now 52, were reunited in 2018 and are currently in the same unit.

The cast of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is yet to be announced, but Netflix have given it a 2024 release date.

In a teaser trailer, a phone call the brothers made to the police to report their parents were dead is played.

Netflix says it also has exclusive access to Lyle and Erik Menendez for a forthcoming documentary feature.
