A killer who sparked a manhunt will be jailed for life after he admitted murdering a grandmother.
A police manhunt was launched when Alexander Carr disappeared after killing Michelle Hanson, who was found dead in Sunderland on December 3 last year. Following a series of police appeals, Carr was arrested in London on December 21.
Carr had previously admitted the manslaughter of Michelle and was due to stand trial accused of murder, which he previously denied. However he has now pleaded guilty to the more serious charge during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

The 33-year-old, of Wilfred Street, Sunderland, will be sentenced on June 16, when the minimum term he must serve before he can be released from his life sentence will be determined.
Judge Paul Sloan KC told him: "There is only one sentence that can be imposed in respect of the offence of murder and that's a sentence of imprisonment for life. However I'm required to specify the minimum term you must remain in custody before you can even be considered for release.
"I will make a determination as to the minimum term once I've read and heard all relevant information about you."
It was shortly before 12.30pm on December 3, police received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman inside an address on Brady Street, Pallion, Sunderland. Inside, they found the body of 47-year-old Michelle.
Investigating officers found a number of discarded knives as well as forensic evidence pointing to Carr at the scene.
Following an 18-day manhunt, officers travelled to London, and with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Service, followed up a report of a possible sighting, which led them to a tent pitched on a railway embankment near Upper Holloway Train Station.
When officers swooped in, they found Carr inside the tent in possession of a hunting knife.
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr of Northumbria Police, said: “Firstly I would like to praise the bravery and strength shown by Michelle’s family throughout these proceedings.
“Not only have they had to come to terms with the tragic loss of their mam and grandmother, but they also played a role in helping us to locate Carr – who was desperately trying to evade arrest.
“His despicable actions speak volumes. Carr murdered Michelle and then fled down south and went into hiding so he could not be held accountable. That arrogance and lack of remorse has been difficult for Michelle’s family to come to terms with, and we are thankful he is now behind bars, facing a life sentence for his actions.
“We know nothing can bring Michelle back but we hope today can serve as the first step towards the closure her family deserve. No one should have to lose a loved one in such horrific circumstances and as a force, we are committed to tackling all types of violence, and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.”
