Kilbarchan Primary pupils come out on top in Renfrewshire Euroquiz

Four clever pupils put their heads together to come out on top at a fun quiz.

The P6 pupils from Kilbarchan Primary took part in the Euroqiz regional final against teams from other Renfrewshire schools.

The four – Finn Gardner, Isla MacKenzie, Noah Wylie and John Slaven – volunteered to give up their lunchtimes to prepare for the quiz.

And their hard work paid off as they won the regional final and are off to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to take part in the national final.

Proud depute headteacher Amanda Doyle said: “We asked for volunteers from P6 to see who was interested in taking part.

“We held lunchtime sessions every Friday and went through past papers to see how they would get on.

“The final four were chosen because they really wanted it and were willing to commit to it.

“The pupils worked so hard, even during their Easter holidays, to try and learn everything they could.”

The quiz has four rounds focusing on different topics including languages, history, geography, culture and European affairs.

Team Kilbarchan will now head to the Euroquiz National Final on Monday, June 13 which will take place in the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament. There they will take on the winning teams from all other local authorities from across Scotland.

Headteacher Fiona MacKenzie said: “I am exceptionally proud of our pupils at Kilbarchan Primary. They have been the embodiment of our school values.

“They have an intuitive knowledge and understanding of the world and issues around them not just within our own community but further afield.”

The pupils added: “It was an amazing experience and we are elated to have won. It was such a wonderful surprise! We are grateful we were able to compete and enjoyed seeing pupils from other schools.

“We are looking forward to the final. The experience of visiting the Scottish Parliament is an honour.”

The pupil’s class teacher Rona Montgomery said: “The work pupils have put into the quiz has been extraordinary. They have poured hours of hard work both at home and at school into broadening their knowledge and understanding of Europe.

“This has been such a positive experience for both staff and pupils. We cannot wait to visit the Scottish Parliament on 13 June.”

Euroquiz is run by the Scottish European Educational Trust every year.
