Kieran Trippier doesn’t think England deserved to be booed off after their 0-0 draw with the United States on Friday night.

The Three Lions faced a negative reaction despite still topping Group B after a 6-2 win over Iran on the opening day.

Speaking from Al Bayt Stadium, the Newcastle full back defended his team’s performance and explained that they earned a valuable point.

“The USA are a good side, every single team in our group are in the top 20,” Trippier told reporters. “So you can’t underestimate any team, you have to give respect and we certainly do to Iran, USA and Wales.

“We knew it’s going to be a tough game, you see the past results are they are a very good side. If you look at other teams in the tournament, there’s some big results going against them.

“As always, I think you all know that we go into every game to win and unfortunately it wasn’t to be. The US are a good side, we knew that before the game, they are an athletic team, good tactically.

“So we knew it was going to be a tough battle but in tournaments, you can’t win every game so it is a good point for us.

“I didn’t hear the booing but yes, of course, the fans want to see goals and to win matches but all I can say to that is that the commitment from the boys is there, we give 100 percent in every single game so yes, of course, we understand the frustration because we didn’t win the game but we gave everything, a point is a good result.

“Of course, in the final third, there were some moments where we can be better, of course. But actually, it’s the second game and four points on the board in the group, it’s only positive for myself and the team.

“We didn’t lose the game, we didn’t concede and we’re just fully focused on Wales now.”

England need a point to qualify for the last 16 and only a win will guarantee the top spot going into the knockout stage.

Wales will be motivated to face their rivals on Tuesday and need a win to have any chance of progressing in the World Cup.

Trippier admitted there is extra motivation when facing a home nation: “The motivation is there, England v Wales is a massive game.

“So all we can do now is recover, review the game where we could have done better of course and get ready for the next battle.”
