Kieran Trippier retires from England duty as interim boss Lee Carsley prepares to name first squad

Kieran Trippier has retired from England duty as interim manager Lee Carsley prepares to name his first squad since replacing Gareth Southgate as head coach.

Trippier was handed his England debut by Southgate against France in 2017 and went on to earn 54 caps for the Three Lions, and his only international goal was the free-kick which put England into the lead in their 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia.

The right-back played in all of England’s matches at Euro 2024 except for the final, and also featured at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, as well as Euro 2020.

He proved a loyal servant under Southgate but has now decided to hang up his international boots, aged 33, with his future at Newcastle United in some doubt.

In a statement on social media, Trippier wrote: “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps.

“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments. I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.

“Thank you to all my team mates — we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi-final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.”

Trippier added: “I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future. And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments.”
