Kieran Trippier on Newcastle United's togetherness, outside noise and Leeds United clash

Kieran Trippier claims he's seen "no negativity" in the Newcastle ranks despite picking up just one win all season.

The Magpies new signing has given the squad a real lift in terms of quality, and the new owners struck gold with his signature.

Eddie Howe confirmed that the club was working hard behind the scenes to bring in new faces, but it's been a frustrating week for the Toon.

Talks are ongoing with Manchester United for Jesse Lingard, while negotiations with Sevilla for Diego Carlos are also being drawn out, according to the latest reports.

Newcastle conceded a late goal against relegation rivals Watford, to deny the Magpies what would have been their second win of the season in all competitions.

While it was disappointing, Trippier believes there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

Speaking to NUFC, he said: "Conceding the way we did, at the time of the game we did as well, we were so close to three points - there was a lot of positives to take from the game.

"The most important thing was we didn't get the three points. We've had a good week training and spirits are high.

"Everybody is in good shape and we're glad there's a game around the corner to put things right."

Newcastle have dropped 21 points from winning positions and every game between now and the end of the season is a must-win, according to Trippier.

He said: "I think every game is [a must-win game] from the first game of the season until the end of the season every game is important. Before the Watford game, because of the situation of the team - they were right next to us - it was a must-win game.

"But, we got a point and we didn't lose and we move forward. We mustn't get too far ahead of ourselves. We know it's a must-win game against Leeds.

"It's going to be a tough game. We know what they're all about but we just need to stick to the game plan we've been working on all week to get the three points."

The Magpies have drawn a remarkable nine games this season, the joint second highest in the division.

"If you keep drawing too many games it's going to be difficult to stay in the Premier League, " said Trippier. "We know which direction we want to be going in, we're working hard every single day with the gaffer and our teammates to get the three points.

"Tomorrow is going to be no different. We'll go with the winning mentality and mindset to get the three points. We need to start moving ourselves up the table.

"I think if you look at the performance against Watford the other day, it was a good performance, now in the Premier League at this level you need to be clinical in front of goal.

"We're getting the chances. When the opportunities come we need to be more clinical, that's a given."

The Toon will take on a Leeds side who found themselves in a relegation battle earlier in the campaign but have won their last two Premier League outings.

Trippier added: "You look at Southampton as well - they're good sides - they've picked up two wins and a draw. You look where they are in the table - one or two wins can change everything in the league and change the position of the table.

"Like I said, we can only focus on ourselves. We know what our goal is between now and the end of the season and we need to put it right on the pitch. That starts tomorrow."

Trippier was the first statement signing of the new Saudi ownership and fans have quickly taken to the England international.

Results aside, it's been an enjoyable start to life on Tyneside for the former Spurs fullback.

He said: "Results aside - I would've liked to win both games - it's been unbelievable. I feel like with the lads, they've all been really good with me.

"It was important, I knew a few of the boys before I come. I'm the type who can settle in anywhere as I did in Spain when I didn't know anybody. It's been a great experience.

"You can feel the buzz around the city and it's an exciting time to be a fan. It's an exciting time to be a player for Newcastle. Hopefully there'll be a lot of positives to take now and into the future."

"When I first signed I was in the empty stadium and you just get that real buzz about the place," said Trippier. "Like I said, the Cambridge game was an amazing atmosphere and a great reception for myself.

"You see how passionate the fans are and I know everyone says it - the twelfth man - but you see the excitement around the place and the fans deserve it.

"They've been brilliant with me. The support has been fantastic, not just in the stadium but around the place and as I've been staying in the hotel. There's a real good feel.

"That's nice for me as a player because you know you've got so much support."

Trippier has spent the majority of his career battling for major honours, but is no stranger to a relegation battle. The 31-year-old believes Newcastle have the right mentality and togetherness.

He said:"It's massive [togetherness] because I've been in this situation before with Burnley. The year we got relegated. I've played at the top of the table, I've played at the bottom of the table. For me, togetherness should be a given wherever you are in the table.

"It's not just about the 11 players that are playing, it's about the squad. We're on team and everyone has to be ready. Substitutes are so important when they come on. I've not seen any negatives since I've been here.

"Everyone is positive, even with some players who aren't playing.

"I've been in that position before when I've not been playing with my national team or for clubs in the past, at Tottenham or wherever.

"You just have to be ready because in these moments, when we're fighting to stay in the Premier League, we'll need everybody.

"That togetherness is a given and everybody should be working hard every day to held the team reach the goal."

Speculation has been rife throughout the window, in terms of new faces at St. James' Park, but Trippier agrees with Howe's stance on new arrivals.

He said: "As a player, I know I'm a new player here, but we need to focus on who is here. We don't want to be listening to the speculation in the media.

"It's the players who are here who are going try to the job and stay in the Premier League. The players we've got here are fantastic players. I've seen the togetherness from the first two weeks I've been here.

"The most important thing is we work hard as a team - the players here in this current moment. We're focussed against Leeds to try and get three points and not worry about anything else."
