Kieran Trippier expects Eddie Howe 'to go mad' after Newcastle's Aston Villa defeat

Kieran Trippier says Newcastle United “weren’t right” at Villa Park. The 3-0 defeat dented Newcastle’s Champions League hopes in their heaviest defeat of the season.

The Magpies trailed 1-0 at the break before two Ollie Watkins goals in the second half cemented the defeat on a day in which little when right for the visitors. Villa hit the post and the crossbar in the first half and, despite bringing on Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron on early in the second period, United were unable to turn the tide.

Trippier told BT Sports: "From minute one we knew we weren't right. Aston Villa came out of the traps quickly. The way we played wasn't ourselves.

“We've got to forget about his result as we have big games coming up. No excuses but this is what we do ultimately [play a lot of games]. In and out of possession we were well off it. Full credit to Aston Villa they played well.”

Trippier said he expected Howe to “go mad” after the heavy loss.

He said: "[I expect the manager to] go mad to be honest. Like I said before, out of possession we are normally aggressive and press. Today in possession we were long ball and that's unlike us. We will focus on the game against Spurs.”
