KFC worker slashes man's head open while trying to pour pint on him

A drunken mum-of-one cut a man's head open as she tried to pour a drink over him during an argument in their local pub.

KFC worker Laura Murphy was so intoxicated she inadvertently smashed the glass in Stephen Brolly's face as she attempted to soak him with a double vodka and cola.

Mr Brolly suffered a cut to his forehead and had to be given first aid by staff at the Bradley public house in Widnes, Cheshire.

Police are thought to have spoken to him but he declined to make a complaint.

Murphy, 35, who had been on a works do with colleagues from the fast food chain was arrested after CCTV captured the incident.

She later claimed the glass must have slipped out of her hand as she remonstrated with Mr Brolly and his friends when she began drunkenly dancing around the premises.

At Warrington Magistrates Court, Murphy, of Widnes admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was ordered to pay the victim £100 compensation.

She was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement Days and pay £180 in costs and a victim surcharge.

The incident took place at about 10.20pm on March 25 where Murphy was described as being "extremely intoxicated."

Angela Blackmore prosecuting said: "A member of staff from the public house indicated that she saw the defendant throw a glass at the victim causing a cut to the forehead.

"There were a number of other parties, but they did not want to give statements.

"CCTV footage shows Murphy dancing in the public house and appearing to be under the influence of alcohol.

"She is then seen talking to three men who are sitting around a table across from the bar.

"She then appears to be shouting in the direction of Mr Brolly. She is seen to throw a glass of liquid at him causing a cut to his forehead as the glass makes contact.

"He received first aid by staff at the location.

Her response was: 'I only threw something at his face, I didn't smash his face like you are making out.'

"The victim did not want to make a formal complaint. He said he 'had a lot going on.'

Miss Blackmore added: "She accepts she threw a glass at Mr Brolly in his general direction.

"It was impulsive and she did not intend to cause injury to the forehead of the victim.

"She said she works at KFC and had been out with the boss and some friends.

"She remembers going to the Bradley Public House but could not remember the incident and did not recall being outside when police arrived.

"It was clear that she had thrown something at the male who was sitting down. She said she would not have thrown it on purpose.

"She said she couldn't recall what had happened before but it must have been something he had said.

"She said she'd had six pints of cider beforehand, and then had two more drinks at the Bradley.

"She had one double vodka and coke and it was her drink that she threw over Mr Brolly."

Murphy who has a 14-year old son had no previous convictions.

Her lawyer Ian Weights said: "Clearly she is very lucky that it was a cut that was relatively minor that did not require much treatment.

"She has never been before the court before and has never done anything like this before.

"She is entirely uncomfortable with what has happened. She does not try to justify it in any way and has accepted responsibility.

"We do not know exactly what led up to it but we are not saying that what it was justified it. "It is entirely out of character.

"We are dealing with someone who has done something extremely foolish.

"She has never done anything like this before and this is not someone who goes around showing aggression."

A character reference given by a KFC area manager Caroline Plumpton said Murphy was "an exceptional employee with a great work ethic, friendly with customers, a positive influence at work and a key person in the team."

It added: "The team respects her and the team can go to her with any issues. "She always goes above and beyond and is always calm under pressure."

Chairman of the magistrates' bench Alf Bean said: "The bottom line is that it's a serious matter and unfortunately you have blotted your copybook.

"What we want is for you to never come to court again and for this to be a salutary lesson.

"We do not feel that you have a problem with drink, we think that we will deal with the issues that you have with probation work.

"We accept that you never meant to cause injury but we feel it's appropriate to mark it."
