KFC swaps lettuce for cabbage in its burger and wraps - and fans are confused

KFC has been forced to put cabbage instead of lettuce in its burgers and wraps in Australia.

The fried chicken chain says its supply chain has been affected by floods that have destroyed lettuce crops.

On its website KFC Australia said: "Due to the recent floods in NSW [New South Wales] and QLD [Queensland] we're currently experiencing a lettuce shortage.

"So, we're using a lettuce and cabbage blend on all products containing lettuce until further notice."

"If that's not your bag, simply click 'Customise' on your chosen product and remove Lettuce from the Recipe," it added.

Customers have been reacting to the substitution on social media.

One person tweeted: “I bought a fillet burger from Endeavor Hills @KFCAustralia today and 50% of the lettuce was white cabbage.”

Another said: “The fact that you are replacing lettuce with cabbage makes me rethink my whole meal at KFC. There's four or five other things I would eat before cabbage.”

A third tweeted: “Hey @KFCAustralia instead of substituting cabbage for lettuce u should use a hash brown instead.”

Shoppers across Australia have complained of huge price increases for fresh fruit and vegetables, largely due to flooding, the war in Ukraine and lockdowns in China.

Some baffled customers have posted photos online of lettuces costing over A$10 (£5.72).

In better news for KFC, the fast food giant has shared plans to open new restaurants, or relocate existing branches, across 500 locations in the UK.

KFC has listed hundreds of sites on its website where it want to open new sites - with plans for more full-size restaurants and drive-thrus.

The restaurant chain also wants to open more travel hubs at airports and roadside stations, as well as “smallbox” sites that fit into 1,000 sqft in high pedestrian areas.

As this is just a wish list of locations where KFC wants to expand, there is no guarantee that restaurants will definitely pop up in each new site.

On the KFC website, the fast food giant says: “We’re on the lookout for over 500 sites.”

It then invites developers to get in touch if they have a space that could be of interest, and says the company will pay £20,000 “for all recognised introductions”.

According to the company, drive thru sites are its most popular type and can be fit into vacant sites of more than 0.3 acres. Existing building conversions will also be considered.

Meanwhile, its restaurant options are considered where drive-thrus cannot be accommodated.
