KFC diner called 999 after seeing man with 'screwdriver'

A KFC customer called 999 after seeing a man wielding what he believes was a 'screwdriver' in the fast food restaurant.

Officers from Merseyside Police attended the KFC on Laird Street, Birkenhead, at around 10.50pm on Monday, March 7, following reports of an altercation in the restaurant.

One diner said he saw a man acting in an "aggressive, threatening manner" in the restaurant, saying he saw officers 'disarm' the man.

Scott Bentley, who called Merseyside Police to report the incident, told the ECHO : "I was aware of this male coming into KFC in an aggressive, threatening manner.

"I took myself away from the situation to call 999.

"Police response was amazing and I can't thank them enough for making it safe by disarming him of the screwdriver."

A spokesperson for KFC told the ECHO : “The safety of our team members and guests is always our top priority.

"We’ve checked in with the team to ensure everyone is okay and luckily no one was injured in the incident at our Birkenhead restaurant.

"The police were called and we’re working with them to investigate further.”

Mr Bentley said his "main objective was to make sure that everyone was safe".

He added: "I want to thank KFC for their kindness as they said next time I go in my meal is free.

"They couldn't thank me enough for making the call to police."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "We were called at 10.50pm last night, Monday, March 7, to reports of an altercation in the KFC in Laird Street in Birkenhead.

"Patrols attended and a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and common assault of an emergency worker.

"The man is currently in custody.

"Nobody was injured during the incident and enquiries remain ongoing."
