Key route in Yate to close for three months as major works get underway

A main route between Yate and Chipping Sodbury is set to close for three months from June, to allow for major works to get underway. The A432 Kennedy Way and Heron Way in Yate are to close on June 6 as work starts to reinstate a right-hand turn for all vehicles.

It was agreed a right-hand turn on Heron Way would be reinstated following a five-year long campaign by residents and MP for Thornbury and Yate Luke Hall. The council confirmed it would re-open the right hand turn in March, after a petition by local conservatives found more than 84 percent of locals backed it.

Following the roadworks, due to be complete on September 6, it's understood that cars will no longer have to drive down Kennedy Way towards Yate Shopping Centre if the journey needs them to head in the opposite direction, reports the Gazette. It is believed the right-hand turn will ease traffic heading into Yate.

South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed to BristolLive that the works will start on Monday, June 6, and last 12 weeks. They will affect the A432 Kennedy Way and Heron Way in Yate.

The council says the work will involve a mixture of narrow lanes, lane closures and temporary road closures. It says further details about the roadworks, which include installing traffic lights, will be released in due course.

When it was agreed, a spokesperson for the local conservatives said: “We are delighted that our campaign to reinstate the right-hand turn from Heron Way onto Kennedy Way has been successful. This will help get Chipping Sodbury and Yate moving, create a greener road network, and prevent knock-on congestion in our local towns and villages.”

Luke Hall added: “Re-opening the right-hand turn off Heron Way has been a key part of my Positive Plan for transport in South Gloucestershire for a long time, and I am delighted that the council have agreed to our proposals. This gets us one step further to getting South Gloucestershire Moving!"
