Key road closures today force First Bus to divert multiple services

First Bus has announced a large number of bus diversions and changes as numerous works are carried out throughout Bristol today (Sunday, March 27).

The Broad Quay bus gate on the Harbourside will be completely closed, Cabot Circus bus stops will not be accessible, Bedminster bus stops will be unavailable, and the Bristol Bus Station will also be blocked.

In response to the large number of closures, First Bus has been forced to change routes, as well as move start and end points for some planned bus services.

There is also the Weston-super-Mare half-marathon taking place this morning, with a number of road closures in place to accommodate the 3,000 runners set to hit the streets.

With roadworks and events taking place, here is what First Bus has done to ensure that journeys can continue as normal.

Broad Quay (Harbourside) closed for carriageway maintenance

Broad Quay will be closed from 8am this morning until 6am on Monday (March 28) for carriageway works to be carried out. First has announced the following changes in response:

  • Services 6, 7 & 36 will terminate and commence from Haymarket stop B10 (back of Primark).
  • Services 42, 43, 44, 45 & m3 will terminate and commence their journeys from Rupert Street bus stop B4. Please use this stop to board and alight.

Broad Quay will not be served. The services above will observe Nelson Street and Broadmead as normal.

  • Services 24, 70, 73, 75, 76, 90, A1 & m1 heading towards Broadmead from Redcliffe will operate normal route as far as Redcliffe Way roundabout but instead of using Bascule Bridge will divert via Redcliff Street, Bristol Bridge, High Street, Wine Street, Union Street where 90 resumes normal route, remainder of services will continue to divert via Rupert Street, St Johns Bridge onto Lewins Mead to resume normal routes (except service 24 which will divert via Rupert Street and Christmas Street to resume normal route at Nelson Street).
  • Services 24, 70, 73, 75, 76, 90, A1, m1 & m2 heading towards from Broadmead to Bedminster, after serving Haymarket and Rupert Street bus stops will divert via Christmas Street, Nelson Street, Fairfax Street, Newgate, Wine Street, High Street, Bristol Bridge, Redcliff Street to resume normal routes at Redcliffe roundabout. Temporary bus stop available at end of Redcliff Street.

The bus stops Centre C9 and Broad Quay will not be served.

  • Services 39, x39 & 349 heading towards Bristol from Redcliffe Way roundabout but instead of using Bascule Bridge will divert via Redcliff Street, Bristol Bridge, High Street, Wine Street, Union Street Rupert Street, St Johns Bridge and terminate at Lewins Mead or Bus Station (see above).
  • Services 39, x39 & 349 heading towards Bath and Keynsham will commence from Lewins Mead will divert via Haymarket, Rupert Street, Bridewell Street, Nelson Street, Fairfax Street, Newgate, Wine Street, High Street, Bristol Bridge and Redcliff Street to resume normal routes at Redcliffe roundabout.

These services will terminate and commence from Lewins Mead between 8am and 6pm today only. Broad Quay will not be served.

Bus station closed

Bristol Bus Station will be closed as emergency carriageway works are being carried out between 8am and 6pm today. This will affect the following services:

  • Excel services x1, x4, x7 and x9 will terminate and commence their journeys from Rupert Street bus stop B2 (first one).
  • Services 39, x39 and 349 will terminate and commence their journeys from Lewins Mead.
  • Services Y2, Y4 and Y5 will terminate their journey on Bond Street stop S2 and will commence from Bond Street on the opposite side of the road stop S1 (normal outbound bus stop).
  • Service 376 will terminate and commence from Bond Street stop S2.
  • A1 (Airport Flyer) will drop off and pick up passengers at Haymarket (B7) outside of the Bristol Fashion.

Closures on the Horsefair

Due to essential building repairs taking place, the bus stops B11 and B13, located outside of Primark and opposite the old M&S store, will be closed between 5.30pm today and 5am on Monday.

The services affected are: 1, 2, 42, 43, 44 and 45.

First provided the following diversion information:

  • Services 1 and 2 will pick up and drop off passengers at stop B15 (outside of Greggs).
  • Services 42, 43, 44 and 45 will drop off and pick up passengers at stop S3 (outside of CEX).

East Street in Bedminster

Due to emergency water works on East Street in Bedminster, certain bus services will be unable to travel through the area. The closure will last from 7am today until 6am on Monday.

First Bus says: "East Street in Bedminster will be closed to services 24, 75, 76, m1 and A1 from 07:00 on Sunday 27th and will remain fully closed until 06:00 on Monday 28th March for emergency water works.

"Due to the additional long term closure of Dalby Avenue, services will be diverted via Cannon Street, Dean Lane, Catherine Mead Street, St Johns Road and Coronation Road.

"Passengers are advised to board or alight at the bus stops Catherine Mead Street, Southville Place on St Johns Road (back of Asda) or New Charlotte Street on Coronation Road.

"Please note although the bus stops signs will say closed please ignore them for this period only."

Weston-super-Mare half marathon closures

A number of road closures have been put in place in Weston-super-Mare this morning as 3,000 people take to the streets for the half marathon.

The roads that are scheduled to be closed are:

  • Richmond Street - from Marine Parade to Gloucester Street, Regent Street (from Marine Parade to York Street), Carlton Street (from Marine Parade to Beach Road).
  • Marine Parade – Beach Road – Links Road – Uphill Way – Uphill Road South (Westbound Lane Closure from Uphill Way to Grange Rd).
  • Uphill Road South (from Grange Rd to A370 Bridgewater Rd) – A370 Bridgewater Road Southbound (from Bridgewater Road to Accommodation Road) Accommodation Road (from A370 to Old Wall) – Wayacre Drove – Uphill Hill Footpath (between Wayacre Drove and Uphill Marina/Links Road).
  • Royal Parade – Knightstone Road – Birnbeck Road– Birkett Road – Kewstoke Road (from Birkett Road to Beach Road)– Seafront Promenade (from Knightstone Causeway to Regent Street Junction/Grand Pier).

There are also a number of bus diversion in place, announced by First earlier this week:

  • Service 7 - Heading towards Haywood Village Will operate normal route as far The Boulevard then turn left at the traffic lights into Alfred Street onto Locking Road right into Francis Fox Road, Station Road, Walliscote Road to resume normal route at The Interchange in Regent Street.
  • Service 7 - Heading towards Worle will operate as far as Walliscote Road but instead of turning right into Oxford Street carry on along Walliscote Road, Station Road, Francis Fox Road, Locking Road, Albert Street to the traffic lights then turn right onto The Boulevard to resume normal route.
  • Service x1 - Heading towards Weston will be unable to serve Marine Parade and will terminate and commence its journey from The Interchange bus stop in Regent Street facing towards Bristol.

  • Service x1 - Heading towards Bristol will commence its journey from The Interchange.
