Key Liverpool duo fire warnings to Newcastle United as top four battle heats up

Jurgen Klopp and Jordan Henderson have fired warnings to Newcastle United ahead of the powder-keg Premier League clash on Saturday night.

The last clash between these two sides ended in chaos as both dugouts clashed and a water bottle was hurled towards Liverpool staff by Toon backroom member Daniel Hodges. To compound matters Liverpool scored in the 98th minute to inflict the only defeat of the top-flight season on Newcastle United.

But since then it is Liverpool's form that has suffered badly and Newcastle have not tasted a defeat since that 2-1 loss at Anfield back in August. The Reds have recovered from an FA Cup knockout at Brighton and a bad defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a much-needed Merseyside derby win over Everton.

Liverpool though still head to St James' Park this weekend in ninth place and off the pace in the chase for the Champions League. Henderson feels there are signs of recovery beginning to emerge, he said: "I thought the overall performance was top from start to finish (v Everton). Everyone was at it; we knew it was a big game for us – a derby game – and we delivered.

"It doesn’t make up for the last few weeks in terms of our performance, but it is certainly a step in the right direction and it was certainly more like us."

Meanwhile, Klopp said: "It was really important (v Everton), gave us all the signs that was us tonight, definitely, and now we have to make sure we are us from now on. The performance was a statement for us.

"Not for the outside world, for us, that we can do this. We can't say 'that's it - we're back', that would be really dumb. "It felt like us and looked like us. If that is the moment for us we have to keep going, we have difficult games to play but people are believing again."
