Key Blake Austin contract detail as Leeds Rhinos ace enters open market

Blake Austin is on the open market after a wave of negotiations with Leeds Rhinos proved unsuccessful. Rugby League Live revealed on Monday that Austin's agent had offered the halfback to rival clubs with a deal at Headingley still yet to be agreed.

Now, Rugby League Live has learned that the key stumbling block in negotiations has been the length of the contract. Austin's representatives are pursuing a two-year deal for the former NRL halfback, but the Rhinos have only offered a one-year extension. That has proven to be a sticking point in talks and resulted in Austin exploring his options elsewhere.

Leeds are keen for Austin to remain at the club for a third season. Likewise, it is believed that the 32-year-old would like to continue his career at Headingley. But with both sides unable to come to an agreement at this stage, it's unclear what the conclusion of the latest developments will be.

Austin has had a sound campaign so far, notching 14 assists in 15 appearances. He arguably produced his best-ever performance in Leeds colours last Friday in a stunning display at the expense of Huddersfield Giants, with the Rhinos winning 54-0.

There is an element of mystique surrounding Leeds' recruitment plans for 2024. Fellow halfback Aidan Sezer is expected to leave the club at the end of his current contract while Sam Walters' move to Wigan Warriors has now been confirmed. Liam Tindall will head to Hull FC while coming the other way, Frenchman Mickael Goudemand is expected to arrive.

The Rhinos are understood to be considering Tyrone Roberts as a halfback option next year but further plans have remained quiet to this point. As for Austin, it remains to be seen whether either party will budge on their demands or if Austin attracts interest from elsewhere.

The halfback is currently in his fifth season in Super League having previously played for Warrington Wolves. In 91 Super League appearances, he has scored 35 tries and before that, he had spent multiple years in the NRL playing for Penrith Panthers, Wests Tigers and Canberra Raiders.
