Kevin Trapp is firmly on Manchester United 's radar - but will not be content to play second fiddle at the club.
The Red Devils are seeking a new No 2 after Dean Henderson's loan exit leaves them light in goal. David de Gea remains the club's No 1 but has already made two blunders this term and Erik ten Hag wants a goalkeeper who can put genuine pressure on the Spaniard.
Finding that man has proved tough, with Swiss international Yann Sommer another goalkeeper linked with an Old Trafford move. With regards to Trapp, Frankfurt's €25million (£21m) valuation is putting United off any move, even though Ten Hag is keen on the player, according to the Daily Telegraph. It may mean the transfer is put on hold for now.
Trapp may also be weighing up his options. He has previously grown frustrated at being a back-up in the pecking order. He joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2015 but, in the final year of his spell in the French capital, was limited to just four Ligue 1 appearances.
Alphonse Areola established himself as first choice and Trapp was forced to face questions over his future, confessing that his situation in France was "not satisfying".
He said previously: "A move always must make sense and after speaking with those in charge here, it was just the better step to stay in Paris. I work hard every day and I want to come out on top. Sure, the situation is not satisfying."
Trapp returned to Frankfurt in 2018, the club whom he left to join PSG. Back in his homeland, he has become a Europa League winner and will be thinking twice about giving up his No 1 status to go and sit on the bench for a European giant.
He played a staring role at Frankfurt as they claimed European glory over Rangers in a penalty shootout. However, he may be wise to the difficulties experienced by Henderson, who was forced to watch from the bench as De Gea remained the club's No 1.
There was a reluctance, especially under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to drop the Spaniard, even after he committed high-profile errors. Henderson has opened up recently on the frustration he felt before moving on this summer.
He told talkSPORT : "It was frustrating because I turned down so many good loans last summer for that reason, and they would not let me go. To sit there and waste 12 months, it is criminal really, at my age, I was fuming."
He continued: "I told the hierarchy that I need to be playing football, I don’t want to be here and play second fiddle, it was planned out. I was almost gone before the manager [Erik ten Hag] came through the door. I have not spoken to him since."
The difficulty for Trapp will be the obvious desire from Ten Hag to have a settled core. Yes, he wants competition for places, but the most successful clubs are not chopping and changing their goalkeeper every fortnight. De Gea remains the occupant of the No 1 jersey and will be a hard man to dislodge.
