Kevin Costner shares 'sad part' of being a doting dad to seven children

Kevin Costner has opened up about the "sad part" of parenting his seven children.

The Hollywood star, 67, shares three children with his wife of 18 years Christine, as well as four other older children from previous relationships.

Doting dad Kevin shares sons Cayden, 15, and Hayes, 13, plus daughter Grace, 12, with Christine and also cares for daughters Annie and Lily, and sons Joe and Liam.

The Oscar-winning film star has detailed his life off-screen when he's "just dad" and looking after his kids while 'twiddling his thumbs'.

He explained the "sad part" of life as a parent with kids quickly growing up in an interview ahead of his new Fox Nation docu-series Yellowstone One-Fifty.

"You've got to get down on the ground and play with them," he said of his growing up kids. "And you teach them to be independent — and the sad part about that is they become that."

He told People: "I'm like any other parent: I'm trying to figure it out."

Clearly wanting to keep his kids close by, Kevin revealed that he gave his teenage son Hayes a small role in his upcoming four-part western show Horizon.

"He's very good," Kevin said. "But I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me.

He told the outlet: "And the same thing for Cayden, same thing for Grace. 'This is really neat. You should come be with me'."

Speaking of life outside of work, Kevin said that he was "a provider", adding: "I'm a father and I'm a husband, but the world doesn't revolve around me."

When not making a movie, Kevin says he is "living and on the freeway with my wife" or "getting the kids to their stuff".

He said he could also be "waiting for them to come out of a party", saying he is often "just twiddling my thumbs". "People have a wrong idea about how my life works," he explained.

In his new Fox programme, Kevin will explore the history and wildlife of Yellowstone National Park in honour of its 150th anniversary.

His full interview with People is available on newsstands on Friday.
