Kev Candy: We appreciate everyone who lends their support to St Johnstone WFC

St Johnstone WFC manager Kev Candy has revealed his father has been transformed into a regular supporter after being impressed by the entertainment on offer.

Dad Laurence is making the journey through to the Riverside Stadium to follow the fortunes of the Perth side.

Candy is hopeful for a bumper crowd in the club’s final home game of the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 season on Sunday when Gartcairn come calling.

“We appreciate every single person who lends their support at Riverside,” Candy told the PA.

“Indeed, my dad has now started journeying through from Forfar to watch, having been pleasantly surprised with the standard of entertainment on offer.

“Whilst we can never guarantee a result, we can always guarantee a maximum effort on the field.”

Candy - and indeed dad Laurence - were left to mull over a 3-2 Riverside defeat against league leaders Montrose on Sunday past.

Saints had led 2-1 at the interval thanks to goals from Morgan Steedman and Steffi Simson.

Candy said: “A massive regret from Sunday is that the players came away with nothing to show for their considerable efforts.

“With Sunday being a third game in 10 days, we were aware we were asking a lot of the players from a physical point of view, given how we tried to play the game and deal with the Montrose threat.

“Once that threat was contained to a level in the first half, I thought some of our forward play was delightful.

“I felt we were dealing with the Montrose attacking way of play in the desired manner and we were well aware that it would be likely they would change shape a bit to counter that.”

Montrose hit back early in the second half before grabbing the winner 10 minutes from time. The result sees Saints sitting fifth in the standings.

“Popping an additional player out of their backline made a difference for them,” Candy said.

“In hindsight, we could have perhaps been braver in tweaking our way of play to try and exploit the space Montrose were leaving at the back.

“But given our main ethos on the day was built around defensive stability and resiliency, it felt unwise to disrupt our system too much at the time. As with many decisions, faced with it again you might play it differently.”

Sunday’s match against Gartcairn at the Riverside kicks-off at 1pm and all support would be much appreciated.
