Ketanji Brown Jackson is set to fulfill another one of her life’s goals as the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court. She is scheduled to make a special appearance in a Broadway show called “& Juliet” on Saturday for a one-night performance. The show announced on Instagram that Jackson will have a walk-on role in the 8 p.m. ET show and will engage in a talkback session with the audience after the performance.
While the specific details of Jackson’s role were not disclosed by the show, it was reported by Deadline that she will take on an ensemble spot specially created for her. In her memoir “Lovely One,” Jackson expressed her aspiration to be the first Black, female Supreme Court justice to appear on a Broadway stage in her application essay to Harvard University, where she obtained her undergraduate and law degrees.
During a press tour for her memoir in September, Jackson showcased her love for theater by singing a few lines from “The Wiz.” She also shared an anecdote about being a scene partner to future Academy Award winner Matt Damon while studying at Harvard, where she received positive feedback from her professor, who was less impressed with Damon’s performance.
“& Juliet” is a contemporary adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” that explores an alternate ending to the Shakespearean tragedy, imagining what would have happened if Juliet had not died. The show, described by The New York Times as a “super-poppy production,” features popular songs like Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.”
