Kesh Bridge to receive £200,000 upgrade as part of Covid Recovery scheme

The upgrade and improvement of Kesh Bridge is to progress after £200,000 funding was approved for the project at a meeting of the local council on Tuesday.

The upgrade of the bridge is one of eleven projects which has had funding approved by the Regeneration and Community Committee of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.

The bridge in the Co Fermanagh town has suffered damage and disrepair in recent years amid calls to improve the bridge for local residents.

The funding for the project will be provided by the Department for Infrastructure as well as the local council.

UUP councillor for Erne North Diana Armstrong said it was a ‘significant’ step for the village following years of difficulty for local residents.

“This is significant to see this scheme listed,” Cllr Armstrong said when proposing to accept the recommendations.

“This will inject considerable vitality back into smaller towns and villages.

“I welcome the report and in particular Kesh Bridge, which has long been a blight.

“I welcome very much the work that has been done to achieve this funding.

“It’s a significant transport corridor and will assist the village in what has been a problem since I became a councillor in 2016.”

Other projects which will benefit from over £1.3 million in funding from the COVID Recovery Small Settlements Regenerations Programme include the Ederney Community Development Trust and the Roslea and District Community Forum.

SDLP councillor Paul Blake seconded the recommendation to approve the funding, which he said would ‘rejuvenate’ small towns and villages in the area.

“I’m happy to second the recommendations because something like this is well overdue for our towns and villages to rejuvenate them and make them an attractive proposition for tenants and leaseholders.”
