Kerry Katona 'ridiculed and mocked' after bipolar diagnosis

Kerry Katona has opened about her bipolar diagnosis and said she has been "ridiculed" and "mocked" in the past because of it.

Today marks World Bipolar Day, the birthday of artist Vincent Van Gogh, who was posthumously diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. In honour of the day, Kerry opened up about her own struggles with the disorder and said "every day is a working in progress."

The 41-year-old posted on Instagram a quote which said: "Having bipolar disorder does not mean you are broken, it means you are strong and brave for battling your mind every single day." Alongside the picture of the quote, Kerry also wrote her own caption on how bipolar has impacted her.

The former Atomic Kitten singer said: "#worldbipolarday for a years and years I was ridiculed, mocked and crucified because of my mental illness BIPOLAR!!! We’ve come a long way but we still have far to go! Every day is a working progress."

Kerry added people with bipolar disorder can lead not only a "normal life" but an "extraordinary one". She added: "Just because of a label I have been given it does not define me as a person! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Who wants to be normal? Not me!!! But who says we can’t have a normal life?? In fact we can have an extraordinary life! Educate yourself people!!!"

Bipolar disorder can be a life-long mental health problem that mainly affects your mood. It affects how you feel and your mood can change massively. You can experience episodes of mania and depression.

There are different types of bipolar disorder. It is treated with medication or talking therapies.
