Kerry GAA chief slams false rumours of players taking drugs calling it ‘a joke’ and ‘unacceptable’

A Kerry GAA chief has dismissed false rumours circulated in an online video that players took drugs.

Kerry county board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan called the allegations “a joke” and “unacceptable”, reports RSVP Live.

In the video, Kerry players could be seen celebrating after their win against Galway in the All-Ireland final, with people chanting ‘the bag’ as a VISA card was handed around.

The Kerry official released a tweet regarding the incident as social media users alleged that the players were taking drugs.

He explained that the people involved in the video were actually shouting out his long-time nickname ‘the bag’ after he handed over his card to pay for drinks after losing a game.

He said: “I am Patrick O’Sullivan (Tatler). ‘The bag’ is my nickname which I got back in the ‘80s from my gear bag I used to bring to games.

“They [players] were chanting my name as I lost in card roulette. It’s a joke to suggest the Kerry players are on drugs and is unacceptable.”

It is understood that the Kerry County Board are considering taking legal actions over the video and rumours.

A Kerry GAA source spoke to the Kerryman about the video as he was present on the night it was taken.

He shared that each person put their debit or credit cards on the table during a game of “roulette” which saw the chosen person paying for a round of drinks.

While he stated he didn’t want to be named, he said the allegations of drug use were “total rubbish”.

The source added that team management were present during the celebrations and security cameras were placed around the venue.

He said: “This is all total rubbish. The people who spread these rumours have false [Twitter] accounts.

Croke Park officials were said to have reached out to the Kerry county board following the video being released online.

Officials on the board stated that ‘the bag’ was in reference to Patrick’s nickname.
