Keon Coleman decides not to play for Michigan State basketball, will stick with football

One of the most beloved athletes in all of Michigan State sports right now is Keon Coleman. The wide receiver electrified the football team this year with his size and innate ability to come down with difficult catches. He is also a bit of an enigma, as he was also a part-time member of the basketball team, and someone who showed some real flashes of ability on the hardcourt.

This winter, we have been waiting for a decision to be made regarding Coleman’s basketball future, and that came on Tuesday when Tom Izzo released a statement that Coleman will be focusing on football moving forward.

“Keon Coleman and I spoke at length this week and we came to the joint decision that it would be best for him to focus on his football career and not join the basketball team at this time,” Izzo said in a statement. “Keon had a great football season and it’s in his best interests to take the next few months to get ready for spring football, while also taking care of his academic obligations.”

While I’m sure Izzo would have loved to have another body in the rotation on his frequently under-manned MSU basketball team, this is probably for the best as Coleman has already been flagged as someone who could play in the NFL someday.
