Kentucky State Police have advice to stay safe while trick or treating

Halloween trick-or-treating is just days away and safety is a concern as kids head out in their costumes to collect candy.

While some families choose to stick to trunk-or-treat events, many still take to the streets in search of Halloween goodies.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Satterly said there’s going to be increased traffic in urban areas compared to rural ones.

“Always be with an adult, wear bright clothing, glow sticks. They’ve got the glow sticks that you can carry, you can put around your neck. Especially in subdivisions where there’s gonna be a lot of traffic parked on the side of the roads, cars pulling in and out. Keep the kids safe, that’s the main thing,” said Satterly.

Some areas are holding trick or treating Saturday evening, others on Monday, October 31st. Trooper Satterly said timing is something to consider.

“Traffic congestion is lighter on Mondays, you know evenings as people get home from work, as to a Saturday night or a Friday night. But still, there’s going to be plenty of traffic out with the kiddos. We want to make sure they’re safe,” said Satterly.

The KSP representative said that while there have not been any confirmed cases of drugs or other dangerous items found in candy, it’s still important to check what kids bring home. Trooper Satterly said children should not be allowed to keep any candy that has been opened or tampered with.
